For optimum growth your plants will need 16 nutrients many of which can be found in fertilizer. But there are so many fertilizer types sorting out which one is for you can take a while.

Your soil's nutrients often get depleted and thus unable to provide your plants with the nutrients needed. Some nutrients like nitrogen are easily leached away by water while others are absorbed by the air. These nutrients then need to be replaced in the soil.

Adding fertilizer will re-supply the soil with the needed nutrients. Fertilizers are made up of a variety of different nutrients and there are actually two classes inorganic and organic.

Inorganic are chemical based fertilizer while organic are made from living materials or materials that were once alive. When choosing fertilizer there are several things you should consider.

The most important consideration is determining what it is your crop needs to optimize the crop. The next most important consideration is what your soil needs. This will require a soil test to discover what has been depleted.

Timing is also very important in your application. Applying while the plant is growing is a safe rule of thumb but you can get plenty more benefits by knowing when your plants need additional nutrients which the fertilizer can provide.

How much fertilizer you need to apply depends on what type of crop and what type of soil as well as what that particular fertilizer needs to be effective so be sure to read the instructions.

There are different methods to apply your fertilizer. Granular types can be applied using a spreader or by hand while liquid types are generally applied using a sprayer attached to your garden hose.

There are many types of fertilizers on the market.

1. GranularIs a dry fertilizer which is easy to use and lasts a long time. It is probably the most popular style on the market. They can be bought in 20 or 50 pound bags.2. Time ReleaseAre growing in popularity because they will provide fertilizer to your crop for up to 6 months after being applied. This means there are less demands on your time and no worries about forgetting to apply.3. Fast ReleaseAre able to provide nutrients faster than any other type of fertilizer. These formulas are easy to use, very affordable, and they last for a few months.4. LiquidAttach to your garden hose with a small container and start spraying. It's that simple. However if you don't have a hose system this method is not for you. It's very effective and often it is combined with a pesticide and weed killer.5. OrganicSome people like natural opposed to chemicals and thus the organics are growing in popularity. They are made from once living organisms. They are not as predictable as chemical formulas but they are much more natural.

With all the different fertilizer types on the market understanding the differences will make it much easier for you to choose the right fertilizer for you.
