Why does my dog hate cats?

  • He is one year old and was rescued from a shelter where he lived only two days, before that he lived with an elderly couple. He is house broken, well mannered, and obeys unless he smells or sees a cat. then he is almost uncontrollable. Never growling or barking until a good pursuit is taking place. Once he is in "cat mode" I have to physically restrain him by his collar or lead and make him set. this helps for a few minuets but a smell or sighting and it is all i can do to stop him and I am 200 pounds. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really did not want to have to name the breed because of the stigma around them but, he is a rottweiler.
He is very play-full with my kids and my female red healer. He has been fixed so no help there. It may be prey or play but no one around here 9where I live) has been any help.
    Thanks to all who answer.

  • It is a dogs natural instinct, most dogs chase cats and most cats dont like dogs. I am not sure that there is really and scientific reason for it.

  • Honestly the best way to correct this behavior is to work with a professional dog trainer. Do you have a cat, or is this just outside cats? Is it just cats or other dogs also? You need to correct him before he becomes fixated on the cat. Easier said then done, which is why I recommened a dog trainer, especially if he has never had any obiediance training classes. But from your question it sounds like this is his only problem. Check with the shelter were you rescued him as many have free or discounted classes.

  • A lot of dogs hate cats it's a known fact. Maybe if you had both animals grow together from pup to adult they would get along easier. I don't think that dog was around cats that's why he's so aggressive towards the cat. I would suggest you do something about it because rottweilers can get very dangerous when they're provoked.

  • because he cant have any pu$sy cat.

  • i hate cats too..lol

  • Animal instinct?

My very calm mellow Dalmatian freaks out when cats appear (which is all the time in my cat-filled neighborhood).

  • It's natural

  • no no he loves them...for dinner. feed him more of his regular food , he must be hungry.

  • All Dogs Do Hate Cats....To Make Him Not Be Like This....Yes, You Do Have To Train Him. It Takes Time, No Rush.
If You Keep Them In A Same Room (Not A Small One, Livingroom Perhaps), Slowly Let Them Be AloneAnd See What Happends. **BUT** If They Try To Fight....You Get In There Like A Reff And Try Again Till They Calm Down Around Eachother.
They'll Most Likey Be Best Of Friends By Xmas Time :)
    Good Luck To You!

  • He's just having fun. There must be a instinct to chase so it's probably that!

  • cos dogs naturally hate cats

  • number one, well its because ur not the boss in ur pack from the sounds of it even though he generally listens to u, u probably do not establish dominance over him when he gets aggressive, in fact u do that opposite most likely in dogie lingo and ur infact behind him as he tries to run or is out on a walk...so i would do that.
number two, because he was probably not exposed to cats too often, and he feels it is a threat.
number three its because he probably needs to get more exercise as well
number four, he may have napoleon syndrome, even though he is a big dog, a lot of little dogs get that are mostly indoor dogs...they are timid when unwelcome guests are around and use their fear in an aggressive way. by barking, biting and chasing.
and number five which i think is a part of it reguardless, is that he is fixated on it because u allow him to be even though u do take measures to halt him after he gets riled up...when u allow the dog to get excited about it to where he actually wants to chase it, ur not the dominant one...u have to stop his excitement before it hits that point.
here is a tip, get in front of ur dog and firmly tell him or show him that u are the boss that that u are not letting him pass...if he dodges his head back and fourth to see the cat, u are not doing it effectively and u are not establishing dominance...if that isnt enough for u, show him that the cat is ok by u by physically going up to the cat and petting it and really giving a "ur a nice kitty" vibe out...do not touch ur dogs bum and far back area as that is a motivation technique...but mostly i think it is becaue u allow him to be the leader when he is seeing those cats and is chasing them...so firmly grab him with his leash, while u are in front of him while u are parallel and get physically infront of him and give that presence of ur the boss and u mean business...if ur half as*ing it they will sense it...find ur local dog trainer, ask around to all the pet owners u know and eventually u will find one that is able to work with him effectively...instead of spending money that wasnt worth it, its good to ask around and look up reviews.
