IBM's WLAN Gateway Integrates Intersil Chip Set

Intersil and IBM Corporation announced today that the latter is using the Intersil PRISM 2.5 wireless networking chip set in its High Rate Wireless LAN Gateway. The products are Wi-Fi (802.11b) certified and targeted towards the SOHO customer.

The Model 22P6401 IBM Wireless LAN Gateway also includes an integrated access point that can be used with the same 802.11b card used at work. It has a built in firewall and a security feature which IBM calls Statefull Packet Inspection.

Additional features and benefits of the new gateway include:

  • 128-bit WEP encryption
  • Four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch for wired connectivity
  • Network Address Translation (NAT) to enable sharing
  • Firewall
  • RJ-45 WAN connection
  • Browser-based config
  • Front panel status indicators

The PRISM 2.5 chip set from Intersil is specifically designed for small form factor and embedded WLAN solutions utilizing mini-PCI, USB, or Compact Flash connectivity.

The IBM High Rate Wireless LAN Gateway is priced at $299 and can be purchased from the company's Web site.
