How did General Dwight Eisenhower get the nickname of "Ike"?Howdy businessbob-ga,

From the Houghton Mifflin "Reader's Companion to Military History" entry on
President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
"Dwight D. Eisenhower was born to a poor family in Denison, Texas, and there
was little about Ike (his boyhood nickname, based on a guttural shortening of
his last name) that suggested his future as a victorious commander in a world
conflict and the political leader of a superpower."
The above is supported by his brothers sharing the same nickname. From the

The nickname of "Ike" has now become so identified with the name of "Dwight"
(instead of it being the usual nickname of the name "Isaac") that many that
share President Eisenhower's first name are also called "Ike" as well.
