What about Chinese imports and lead, and other dangerous chemicals?

We all know about the lead painted toys from China and the pet food which has killed many pets. Recently I saw Dora, and Cars and others melomine dishes which were made in China. I asked at the supermarket and was told yes they know but they have not gotten any recall notice so they have not removed them. Do you really think out government is checking these items out. I see Lenox, and other great American brands are also now made in China, pots, dishes, knives, coffee pots etc, how safe are all these products? And why can't we make them here?

Additional Details

I don't think we will be able to take back out manufacturing. We won't have the factories, or the manpower, or the know how. It is a setup, it happened old time and too bad it happened again.

It takes a very complicated progress to import and export goods internationally... why it got caught in the huge amount of the purchase order? the factory owner hanged himself...

Of course, when bad things started always more bad things continue... when it got to media... of course the government isnt checking
the politicians have been bought off , they are rich
but the blame falls on us as Americans
we are soo damn busy following Angeline jolie and paris h
they are stealing our country
the chines basically own us ...until we wake up
and they supply Iran with weapons too
  • We can make them here if there is a perceived demand. Remember that at the start of WWII, we barely had a functioning military. But because of the need, we got our military and arms up to speed in a matter of months.

If the cost of goods in China goes up because of the cost of regulating safety, we'll return to manufacturing in a big way, and in a matter of months if we need to.
  • The reason we don't make them here (because we can) is because of comparative advantage. China has lax labor laws and , as we now all see, shoddy and questionable manufacturing practices. America went through the same thing during the industrial revolution before we had regulation. It's only when people start dying and getting sick does anything get done. There's a book by Upton Sinclair called "The Jungle". It was a book that sparked enough public outrage in the early 1900s that our govt had to respond by regulating the manufacturing sector.
Now that China has to regulate their manufacturing sector, they will find their cost of doing business going up and hopefully a good chunk of jobs will return to the US. The problem is that investors want to see a return on their investment by any means necessary. That causes companies like Mattel to outsource their production to cheap countries like China and Mexico so they don't have to pay a minimum wage or comply to safety standards. But now look where their greed has gotten them.
  • well ive read a lot of people blaming corporations and ceo's and such, but who stopped to blame the consumer. we are the bargain addicts after all.
  • Do you really think the current problems with Chinese products will have a long term effect on sales, well no it will not.

Some people will stop buying Chinese goods, until the furor has subsided, and they will then go right back to buying them.

Peoples memories are short, and if it is in their own interest, they will forget about the problems, and happily buy junk from China, and elsewhere.

    Mark my words.
  • the reason so many of our corporations send our jobs over seas is to have them made by cheap labor.. hence made cheaply.. they pay them pennies on the dollar have them imported back to the u.s. and sold for the same price as if an American made them.. so you see it`s so the corporations can get richer quicker....and to hell with the consumers..
  • it is up to lenox to check and make the results known to the public.
