I was wondering what are 3 (or more) most common materials used in the protection of patients and hospital personnel during medical diagnostic procedures? These materials need to be able to shield against x-rays, alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Also, is there any reputable web sources that I can get reference from? Thanks alot!Lead is one.One of the most common materials used is the lead sheet. Lead is very good at blocking all forms of radiation, and it is relatively easy to find. (Mineral ore extraction)
Another is concrete, assuming that the protection specified includes protection from the equipment from outside the room itself.
You need 1cm of lead, or 6cm of concrete to protect people from radiation. Not sure of any other materials though.Lead is the most commonly used. Concrete does shield from radiation, though lead is more commonly used as it does allow for some flexibility. Most medical facilities just find it simplest to use lead for their patients.
